"Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act."
-Psalm 37:5 ESV
Sometimes life doesn't turn out the way you hoped. Life in this present world can feel backwards. It seems like evil people find success while the righteous don't.
David faced a similar dilemma in Psalm 37. He opens with this line: "Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers" (v. 1)! Don't fear and don't envy, he says, when it seems like evil people get ahead in life while others are left in their dust.
God will make everything work out in the end. He’ll make everything work together. He doesn’t waste anything.
Later in Psalm 37, in verse five, David gives this command: "Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act." Let's dissect this verse a bit by doing a phrasing outline.
[Psa 37:5 ESV]
5 Commit (literally means to "roll"; it's a command)
your way (figurative for path in life)
to the LORD; (Yahveh)
trust in him, (a command)
and he will act.
So, David gives two commands in this verse for God’s people:
(1) commit your life to God and
(2) trust (or have confidence) in God.
Why? Because God will act. He will definitively act and help. He doesn’t always work on our timetable, but he is orchestrating a breathtaking, marvelous plan that will leave us gasping when we see it completed.
What do you need to roll over on God today? Do you have confidence in him? Do you believe deep down that he will act?
I know whatever you’re facing today may seem impossible. I know it may seem like God is absent. I know it may seem confusing. But God will definitely act. One day everything will be made right. Trust him. Commit your way to him.
